COSMETOLOGY INSTRUCTOR
A cosmetology instructor is defined as an individual who teaches or offers to teach 1 or more cosmetology services in a school of cosmetology.
To become licensed as an instructor, an individual must:
- have a high school diploma or its equivalent
- be licensed as a cosmetologist
- have at least 3 years of practical experience, at least 1 year being in a cosmetology establishment (a limited instructor's license can be issued to an individual who meets all the requirements except for the experience.)
- have completed not less than 500 hours of instructor training
- have passed an examination approved by the department and the board
ELECTROLOGY INSTRUCTOR
To become licensed as an electrology instructor, an individual must:
- have a high school diploma or its equivalent
- be licensed as an electrologist
- have at least 3 years of practical experience in electrology, at least 1 year of which shall be in a cosmetology establishment holding a limited license for the practice of electrology (a limited instructor's license can be issued to an individual who meets all the requirements except for the experience.)
- have completed not less than 300 hours of instructor training
- have passed an examination approved by the department and the board
SPECIALIST INSTRUCTOR (Limited)
To obtain a limited specialist instructor license an individual must:
- have a high school diploma or its equivalent
- be licensed as a manicurist, natural hair culturist or esthetician
- have completed not less than 300 hours of instructor training
- have passed an examination approved by the department and the board
The specialist instructor's license shall limit the instruction given by that individual to only the services in which he or she is licensed.
