The title registration of Foresters is is regulated by Article 21 of Public Act 299 of 1980, as amended. Article 21 defines a forester as a person who by reason of his or her knowledge of the natural sciences, mathematics and principles of forestry, acquired by forestry education and practical experience, is qualified to engage in the practice of professional forestry.
The practice of professional forestry includes forest management, silviculture (the science and practice of controlling the composition and growth of forests), forest protection, forest and watershed management and planning and other forest activities which could include forestry product appraisal, urban forestry and the teaching of scientific courses in forestry.
The department currently oversees the practice of approximately 226 registered foresters.
