Ocularist
To become registered as an ocularist an individual must have graduated from an accredited high school or have an equivalent education, and have done 1 or more of the following:
- successfully completed at least 5 years of apprenticeship training under
an ocularist in this state;
- successfully completed a prescribed course in ocularist training programs
in a college, teaching facility or university approved by the department;
- been principally engaged in the practice of ocularism outside this state
for at least 5 years and been employed by an ocularist, optometrist or physician
for at least 1 year in this state.
Article 27 does not require an individual registered as an optometrist or a physician under the public health code to be licensed as an ocularist to engage in the practice of ocularism.
Ocularist Apprentice
To become an ocularist apprentice, an individual must make application to the department and furnish the department with a statement of an ocularist under oath stating that the applicant is receiving training under the direct supervision of the ocularist. The applicant must also be a graduate from an accredited high school or have an equivalent education. An apprentice shall complete the apprenticeship within 8 years after beginning the program.
