Fourteen hours of continuing education are required per year for all appraiser categories. Therefore, for 2-year renewal cycles licensees must complete 28 hours of continuing education. Fourteen hours of continuing education is required for Limited Real Estate Appraisers in 3rd and successive years.
Continuing Education For Partial Years
According to the Appraiser Qualifications Board, appraisers are required to complete continuing education for a partial year in a continuing education cycle as follows:
· For a license that has been issued 185 days or more as of the license expiration date, 14 hours of continuing education is required to renew the license.
· For a license that has been issued less than 185 days as of the license expiration date, no hours of continuing education are required to renew the license.
· Consequently, when a licensed appraiser is issued a license for a different category of real estate appraiser licensure ("upgraded") and that upgraded license will expire 185 days or more from the issue date, the appraiser must complete 14 hours of continuing education to renew the license.
To ensure that your renewal is processed timely, continuing education should be completed and reported to the department no later than May 30 of each renewal year, even though the deadline for continuing education is July 31 of each renewal year. The hours may be completed at any time during the 2-year renewal period, which begins August 1 of each renewal year.
All continuing education sponsors and courses must be pre-approved. If you are considering taking a course, you may wish to check the list of approved continuing education courses and sponsors on

Continuing education for a certified general appraiser shall cover both residential and non-residential real property. Licensees should refer to Section 2627 of the Michigan Occupational Code and Administrative Rule 326 for specific continuing education requirements. The 7-hour National USPAP course must be completed every renewal period. Also, a 2-hour course on Michigan appraiser licensing law and rules must be completed at a minimum of every 4 years (every other renewal cycle).
The department will not notify licensees before renewal about the current status of their continuing education credits. Excess hours will not carry over to the next renewal cycle. You can check your continuing education by
