Straits State Harbor Nearing Completion The Straits State Harbor in Mackinac City is nearing completion. This redevelopment of land once used for the ferry docks will provide an excellent opportunity for recreational boaters to enjoy the Straits area. The project uses sustainable design principles such as natural lighting and ventilation, Michigan materials, and eight wind turbines will provide a portion of the power needed to operate the Harbormaster's Building in the summer and the dock-protecting bubbler system in the winter.

New Green Toilet and Shower Building at Otsego State Park The new Toilet and Shower Building at Otsego State Park is complete. Using many of the same sustainable design principles as the Grand Haven Toilet and Shower Building, this version incorporates site-specific features such as rain gardens to handle runoff, and uses a slightly different palette of materials in keeping with its wooded site. Jan Miller and Ken Dao of the Design and Construction Division, DMB Facilities Administration, provided project direction and representation for this project.

AIA Grand Valley Chapter Sustainable Design Honor Award for the Grand Haven State Park Toilet and Shower Building! The Grand Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has recognized the new toilet and shower building at Grand Haven State Park with its Sustainable Design Honor Award. This innovative building uses sustainable design features such as natural ventilation, daylighting and recyclable and natural materials. Designed and built according to LEED standards, it is a prototype for future state park buildings. Jan Miller from the Design & Construction Division and Doug Gallup from the Department of Natural Resources were the project team for this innovative building.

Cadillac Transportation Service Center The Cadillac Transportation Service Center is now complete. MDOT now has a modern and functional office for this growing region. Innovative "light tubes" provide daylighting deep within the structure, saving energy. Harold Belcher and Ken Dao provided project direction and representation for this project.

Wind Turbines Installed at Mackinaw City Eight wind turbines have been installed and tested at the Mackinaw City State Harbor. These turbines will provide electricity to power a portion of the harbormaster's building as well as a portion of the operation of the ice suppression bubbler system necessary to protect the docks. These turbines were placed on the former ferry dock and extend into Lake Huron. The entire project will be complete in 2010. Harold Belcher (DMB)and Ken Davis (DNR)are providing project direction and field representation on behalf of the State of Michigan.

Mackinac Island State Harbor of Refuge Project Complete -- The Mackinac Island State Harbor of Refuge has been refurbished to meet the needs of Michigan boaters, incorporating sustainable design concepts and providing safer facilities. Bob Adams and Mark Knoebel from the Design and Construction Division provided project direction and inspection services for the Department of Natural Resources.

Gaylord to Mackinaw City Trail is complete! Construction is complete for the Gaylord to Mackinaw City Trail. This trail provides recreational and economic opportunities for northern lower Michigan by converting a former railroad corridor for use by hikers, bicylists, and snowmobilers. New MDOT Houghton Maintenance Garage The Houghton Maintenance Garage will provide the Michigan Department of Transportation with a new and modern facility for its staff and equipment to clear snow and maintain Houghton area roads. New Air Handling Unit, General Services Building The new air handling unit at the General Services Building allows the Department of Management and Budget to more efficiently and safely provide a good working environment. Mason Building New Air Handler and Garden Level Renovation Adding a new Air Handling Unit to the Mason Building Garden Level allowed DMB to improve energy use as well as providing improved office and storage space. Dave Sproul and Anup Shah provided project direction and inspection for the DMB project team.

New Days River Ski Trail Bridge, Gladstone The Days River Ski Trail Bridge in Gladstone will provide a safe river crossing for hikers and cross-country skiers. Demolition of the Kinross Correctional Facility Power Plant The Kinross Power Plant demolition features the recycling of nearly all components of the structure. The first photo shows demolition undeway. Click on the link to see piping, steel, and boilers collected for recycling. Even the unused coal has been removed for use elsewhere.
