Project Team Member

Help me!  I'm on a new project team!

As a new team member, you have the responsibility of conducting project activities.  You assist the project manager in planning the development effort, identifying technical solution alternatives, and helping construct commitments to complete the project within established schedule and budget constraints.  You may even be the subject matter expert!  You will definitely interact with the project manager and may also interact with the project sponsor or business owner.

Specifically for each phase of a project (initiation, planning, executive, control, and closeout), you may be responsible for the following:

  • Initiation - Provide estimates for developing products; ensure that requirements are feasible and appropriate for available resources; analyze requirements for completeness, consistency, and clarity; and conduct feasibility studies.
  • Planning - Develop technical approach; partition and assign development tasks; assist in development of estimates and schedules; assist in development of a quality assurance and configuration management plan; identify tools for the project; ensure that all members of the project team understand the Project Plan; identify staff training needs; and ensure that project execution staff understands requirements.
  • Execution - Create product and process solutions; track the project execution effort and submit status reports; conduct internal and external reviews and walk-throughs; create configuration control and baseline documents; and create testing plans and coordinate test activities.
  • Control - Identify problems and schedule fixes; coordinate with quality assurance, review quality assurance results and correct any deviations; identify and react to risks as they are found; and participate in change reviews.
  • Closeout - Participate in lessons learned sessions; identify ways to improve project processes; and turn over all project-related documentation to the project manager for archiving.

You were chosen to be on this project due to your expertise in the area that the project manager needs.
