The Arthur P. Tesner Leadership Award was created in the memory of a citizen-soldier at his best. The award is given to the student that best exemplifies the spirit of leadership promoted by the Freedom Academy and displayed by Brig. Gen. Arthur P. Tesner. The award's plaque has a picture of Gen. Tesner inscribed with the following words:

Counselors and staff nominate delegates based on how well they fit the following criteria:
- Exemplifies the spirit, values and goals of the academy.
- Confronts challenges with courage and resolve.
- Endeavors to expand horizons and attains personal growth.
- Encourages and contributes to the success and growth of others.
- Contributes to group unity and team spirit.
The award recipient is chosen by the class through a secret ballot. The winner of the Arthur P. Tesner Leadership Award receives a trophy, certificate, and $1000 grant to be used for college.
