Academy Speech Contest Guidelines

  1. If you wish, you may participate in the annual Freedom Academy Speech contest. There will be a minimum of one participant per flight. First place winner will receive $100.00 in cash or a US savings bond, second and third place winners will receive $50.00 in cash or a US savings bond.
  2. If you previously attended the Freedom Academy, you are not eligible to enter the speech contest.
  3. The subjects this year are: TBD (Will be mailed with the delegates' packets prior to the Academy.)
  4. THE FOLLOWING RULES WILL APPLY:
    1. The speech must be at least three minutes in duration; but NOT longer than six minutes.
    2. Your speech must be an "original" and not previously given at a public event. NOTE: Quotations may be used, however, they should be limited in size and number so that your speech is "your speech".
  5. You will be judged on the following points:
    1. Subject matter. Is it focused, pertinent and meaningful?
    2. Is the speech inspiring and motivational?
    3. Does the speaker cover the subject matter adequately?
    4. Does the speaker stay within the time limits?
    5. Mannerisms. Does the speaker appear nervous, tense or under pressure?
    6. Delivery. Does the speaker portray the message to the audience?
    7. Preparation. Is the speaker prepared?
  6. The judges will consist of Freedom Academy Staff and other special guests. Their decisions will be final.
  7. Those presenting speeches MUST use 3x5 note cards or speak from a manuscript. The manuscript will be turned in to the Activities Director at the conclusion of your presentation.
  8. The winners will be awarded a U.S. Savings Bond; which will be mailed to their home address after the completion of the academy. The 1st place winner will present their speech at the closing ceremony.
