The Nutrition Services Department director is a registered dietitian and is responsible for insuring that all areas of the department fulfill their job requirements while meeting state and federal laws. Each of the five full-time clinical dietitians are assigned specific units, providing individualized attention and completing nutritional assessments quarterly on every member. The dietitians also provide nutrition education to the members and/or families.
Special attention is given to members on tube feedings and members with chewing and swallowing problems. Diets are customized to their needs. Thus, we have a Speech/Language Pathologist that comes to the Home weekly to assess members feeding abilities and recommend diet changes as needed. Our dietitians work closely with the nursing staff, speech therapists, and physical therapists to provide dysphasia screening and provision of adaptive equipment to help members improve their self-feeding abilities. All disciplines work together as a team to best meet each member's plan of care and the dietitians attend the members' Interdisciplinary Care Conferences.
The Department utilizes GeriMenu, a computer software program for long-term care members. This program enables the department to best meet each member's food likes/dislikes, texture modifications, and other special dietary needs. A diverse six-week cycle menu is provided, with meals customized to the member's needs and ever changing requests. Special holiday meals are also provided to all members. Therapeutic diets and snacks are available and designed to encourage compliance to any diet restriction or improve meal intake.
