National Guard members must complete the same basic and advanced specialty training as other members of the military services.

If you have never served in any branch of the U.S. military, you will have to attend initial entry (Basic) training and a period of advanced or technical training to learn your Military Occupational Skill (MOS) or Air Force Specialty Code (AFSC). The length this training takes varies greatly with the complexity of the MOS/AFSC. Normally, advanced training follows right after basic training, but full-time students may be able to attend Basic Training one summer and advanced training the next summer.

Persons joining the National Guard who have completed Basic Training with any branch of service do not have to attend Basic Training again. Whether or not you may need to attend MOS/AFSC training depends on your National Guard duty assignment and previous MOS/AFSC qualifications, among other factors.
