The National Guard is one branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Michigan National Guard contains both an Army National Guard and Air National Guard component. The National Guard is composed of reserve forces--civilians who serve their country on a part time basis. Each state has their own National Guard as required by the constitution. In fact, the National Guard is the only branch of the military who's existence is actually required by the U.S. Constitution.

National Guard members must attend the same initial entry (basic) training and skill training as their active duty counterparts. National Guard units are measured by the same standards as similar active duty units in such areas as personnel, equipment, and unit readiness.

Unlike all other federally-fund branches of the military, the National Guard has a unique dual role with both a federal mission and a state mission. The National Guard serves both the nation, in the event of a war or national emergency, and the state.
