POW/MIA Recognition Day 2003

Agency: Military and Veterans Affairs

PRESS RELEASE                                                                                                       September 17, 2003

POW/MIA Recognition Day

The Department of Military and Veterans Affairs will conduct a brief ceremony Friday, Sept. 19, at 1:00p.m., to mark National POW-MIA Recognition Day.  The event will be held at the State Capitol building on the first floor of the rotunda.  The public and media are invited to attend.

Defense officials search for families of Korean and Vietnam War MIAs

The remains of more than 700 American MIAs who fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars have been returned to the United States since 1992; and, although most of them have been identified, large numbers remain unidentified, according to the Department of Defense. With more remains anticipated, particularly from Korea, DoD is looking for help from families to identify them.

In the past year, three Michigan servicemen, lost in a single aircraft accident on January 11, 1968, have been returned to their families for burial. LT. j.g. Philip Stevens of Twin Lake and Petty Officers 2nd Class Donald Thoresen and Kenneth Widon of Detroit were lost along with six other crew members of a Navy OP-2E Neptune operating from Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base on a mission to drop sensors over Laos.

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office reports:

4,452 American military personnel remain missing from WW I

78,976 American military personnel remain missing from WW II

8,186 American military personnel remain missing from the Korean War,

1,883 American military personnel remain missing from the Vietnam War

165 American military personnel remain missing from the Cold War

In Michigan, there are still 365 MIAs from the Korean War; 61 from the Vietnam War; and four from the Cold War.

To aid in the identification process, the use of DNA from family members--especially on the maternal side--has been successful; but, continued efforts have been hampered as contact with family members is lost over time.

To continue the identification process, families of MIAs are encouraged to provide a DNA sample.

The following list of Michigan service personnel declared missing during the Korean and Vietnam Wars was prepared by the Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO):
