Since 1636, when the first militia was established in the Colonies, the National Guard has been ideally suited for the homeland defense role. With both federal and state missions, Guard members receive the same training as their active duty counterparts. Guard members are "on call" in case of a national emergency and are community-based to serve the citizens of Michigan in the event of natural disasters or other events the Governor may deem needs the expertise of Michigan's citizen-soldiers.
The events of September 11, 2001, stunned the entire nation. Michigan's National Guard responded. Answering the Governor's call, Michigan Guard membes are on duty at the state's commercial airports and international border crossings. In fact, Michigan led the nation in augmenting security of the nation's northern border using the National Guard. Michigan Guard members are also supporting other key security needs within the state.
Michigan's National Guard is working with a number of other state, as well as national, agencies. For more information on Michigan's steps to safeguard its citizens by visiting the FAQ - 9/11 Attacks page.
