Young Heroes Referral Criteria

Until there are cures for enemies like childhood cancer, cystic fibrosis, leukemia, and heart disease, the greatest weapon in the arsenal of these remarkable children will continue to be courage--the kind of courage that deserves a hero's medal.

Recipients of the Young Heroes Medal of Honor range in age from 2 to 17. Anyone who knows the child and can verify that the youngster has, indeed, faced or is facing a life-threatening illness or injury can make a referral. The award is primarily for those who have struggled through surgery, chemotherapy, radiation treatments, physical therapy, or other similar types of treatment. As a result, children just recently diagnosed are not typical recipients. On occasion, a child has been awarded the Young Heroes Medal of Honor when a social worker or physician feels the child might be losing hope in their struggle.
