Michigan State Parks and Recreation Areas Provide Plenty of Equestrian Recreation

Horseback Riders at Waterloo Recreation AreaGrab those reins, partner, and head out to a state park or recreation area for a trail ride.

Michigan state parks and recreation areas provide more than 170 miles of trails. You and your horse can even camp together in any of the seven equestrian campgrounds. Facilities include vault toilets, a hand pump for water and plenty of hitching posts for your horse. Cost is $17 a night.

No horse? No problem! Riding stables with rental horses, hay wagon rides and a variety of other fun activities are available at four southeastern Michigan state parks and recreation areas. These facilities are operated under lease agreements so prices, hours and regulations will vary by location. Please use the links below and the telephone numbers to obtain the most recent pricing and hours if renting riding horses are in your plans.

Dedicated volunteers help maintain these trail systems and organize special events and cleanups to assist the DNR in its mission. If you like to ride, consider joining the efforts of these important partners. Michigan state parks are self-supporting and rely on user fees and dedicated volunteers to fulfill its mission of protecting and preserving these scenic areas while providing recreation opportunities for all. So grab your helmets and 10-gallon hats, your spurs and your horse and enjoy the ride.
