Beginning this weekend, anglers are reminded by the Department of Natural Resources to remove their ice fishing shanties from Michigan waters. Different areas of the states have different deadlines for anglers to comply with ice fishing shanty removal.
For anglers who have shanties on Lake St. Clair, this Sunday is the deadline to remove their shanty from the lake.
For anglers in the following Lower Peninsula counties, the deadline is midnight on March 15: Alcona, Alpena, Antrim, Arenac, Bay, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Clare, Crawford, Emmet, Gladwin, Grand Traverse, Iosco, Isabella, Kalkaska, Lake, Leelanau, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta, Midland, Missaukee, Montmorency, Newaygo, Oceana, Ogemaw, Osceola, Oscoda, Otsego, Presque Isle, Roscommon and Wexford.
For all other counties in the Lower Peninsula, the deadline is midnight on March 1.
For all counties in the Upper Peninsula, the deadline is by midnight on March 31.
DNR Law Enforcement Division reminds anglers; however, that all shanties must be removed in all areas if ice conditions become unsafe, regardless of the date. After the deadlines, shanties may be placed and removed the same day until ice conditions are deemed unsafe.
For more information about ice fishing shanty regulations and dates, anglers may consult the 2006-08 Fishing Guide. The guide is available online at the DNR's Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnr.
