Leftover Spring Turkey Licenses Go on Sale

Contact:  Al Stewart 517-373-1263
Agency: Natural Resources

March 6, 2009

The Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters that leftover spring turkey licenses go on sale to unsuccessful license applicants on Monday, March 9, at 10 a.m. Licenses will go on sale to all hunters, including those who did not participate in the application process, on March 16 at 10 a.m.

Applicants can check for license drawing results at http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10363---,00.html.

"There are a large number of licenses available for many areas of the state," said Al Stewart, the DNR's turkey specialist. "The greatest flexibility for hunters is in the Upper Peninsula, where all open areas are included in one hunt unit and licenses are good for the entire April 20 - May 31 season. There are also more than 40,000 licenses available that allow hunters to pursue turkeys on private land anywhere in southern Michigan from April 20 - May 3, the first two weeks of the season."

There are 56,941 total leftover licenses available.

Licenses are available at all state license vendors or can be purchased online at www.michigan.gov/dnr. Hunters may purchase one license.

In 2008, Michigan hunters harvested a record 42,000 turkeys, making Michigan one of the top 10 turkey hunting states in the country.

"The foundation of our spring turkey hunting program is to provide quality hunting while maximizing hunting opportunity," Stewart said. "Turkey hunters consistently rate their spring hunting experience highly."

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
