Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center Offers Spring Programs

The Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center, located at Mitchell State Park in Cadillac, has announces its spring programs.

The spring programs include:

  • Hunter Safety Home Study Class. On Saturday, April 4, this class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Preregistration is required and can be done by calling (231) 779-1321.
  • Laser Shot Shooting Simulations. On Saturday, April 11, the center's laser shot simulations program will be open from noon to 2 p.m.
  • Understanding Michigan's Black Bear. On Saturday, April 18, a program about Michigan's native black bears will be presented from noon to 2 p.m.
  • No Child Left Inside/Earth Day Celebration. On Saturday, April 25, the center will host a No Child Left Inside/Earth Day Celebration, with the archery and pellet gun ranges open from noon until 3 p.m. and fishing on the canal near the center offered from 3 to 5 p.m.
  • Bow Hunter Safety Class. A bow hunter safety class will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at the center. Preregistration is required and can be done by calling (231) 779-1321.
  • Morel Mushrooms and Other Edibles. This program will be offered from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, with Heather Hallen-Adams of Michigan State University.
  • Boater Safety Class. Beginning boaters can learn boating safety from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the center. Preregistration is required and can be done by calling (231) 779-1321.
  • Memorial Day Weekend Celebration. On Saturday, May 23, the center will offer all-day programming for visitors to celebrate Memorial Day. Among the programs are Live Michigan Turtles with Jim McGrath of Nature Discovery from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 3 p.m. In Line Float Fishing will be offered on the canal from 3 to 5 p.m. Bait and tackle will be provided.
  • Laser Shot and Float Fishing. On Saturday, May 30, the center will offer laser shot shooting simulations from noon to 3 p.m. and In Line Float Fishing on the canal from 6 to 8 p.m.

All programs are subject to change. For more information on any programs, call the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center at (231) 779-1321. The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 1 through Nov. 30. The rest of the year, it is open on Fridays from noon to 5 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The center will be closed in observance of Easter Sunday on April 12.
