Onaway State Park Offers New Camper Cabin

Contact:  Greg Kinser 989-785-4388
Agency: Natural Resources

March 5, 2009

Onaway State Park announced today that reservations are now being accepted for the new "Shoreview" camper cabin. The cabin is an excellent way for non-traditional campers to "GO-Get Outdoors" and experience camping, without the investment in camping equipment.

"Shoreview" cabin offers a covered front porch area, large universally accessible deck, fire circle, refrigerator, microwave, outdoor grill, rowboat and electricity. It sleeps up to six people, with two sets of bunk beds in separate rooms and a futon couch in the main living area. Campers must supply their own bedding, dishes and cookware.

This 400-square foot cabin is situated about 50 feet from the Black Lake shoreline, and 300 feet from the park's designated swimming area on the southeast shore of Black Lake, giving visitors excellent views of the sun setting over the lake. Black Lake is known as a great fishing lake, producing walleye, muskies, pike, bass and pan fish.

Onaway State Park is located at 3622 North M-211, six miles north of Onaway in Presque Isle County. The park encompasses 118 acres of rugged but picturesque land, including large unique rock outcroppings, a variety of trees and a three-mile nature trail. The campground, set among virgin white pines, offers solitude and serenity and plenty of family fun, with a variety of natural and historic attractions located in or near the park.

The "Shoreview" camper cabin is available to rent from April 10 to Nov. 30. Rental is $80 per night when the modern restroom facilities are open. The price is reduced to $60 per night in the shoulder seasons when the restroom facilities are closed. Reservations for the new "Shoreview" camper cabin, the campground, or any Michigan state park or recreation area, can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling 800-44-PARKS (800-447-2757). Reservations are now being accepted through the end of August, and will soon be available for the Labor Day weekend.

Due to system upgrades, the reservation service will close at 5 p.m. on March 7 and reopen at 9 a.m. on March 15. During this time, NO reservations will be taken or modified. Click here for more details.

For more information about the cabin, the park, accessibility, events or other amenities, contact the park supervisor at (989) 785-4388 (or TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit the Web site at www.michigan.gov/onaway.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
