Your Favorite State Parks

People are passionate about their parks! Following is a partial listing of the many individuals who shared their favorite locations across the state.

Our family favorite is, hands-down, the Tahquamenon Falls Rivermouth Campground. Even though we have a travel trailer, we camp at the rustic campground just so you can be alongside the Tahquamemon River's edge. The park is beautifully maintained and the personnel there are very friendly and helpful. There is nothing like a boat ride up the river and a few hours of quiet fishing to heal all the stress of everyday life. To be able to sit on the riverbank with a crackling campfire and the dwindling glow of the western sky is nothing short of heaven on earth!
Bill and Lisa McQueen Harbor Springs, Michigan

I have seen some of the most beautiful sunsets at South Higgins Lake State Park. We have been camping for years. Last year, my husband and I rented the mini-cabin and really liked it -- the smell of the campfires at night, people laughing, children having fun and the beautiful lake and sunsets. We would take an evening stroll down to the store and get an ice cream and watch the sun set. We have lots of beautiful memories of camping there.

Yankee Springs is a short drive from Grand Rapids. With the cost of fuel, this is important for a short trip. The park is wonderfully clean and attractive, from the boat ramps which can handle four boats at the same time to the large campground. The staff is helpful, and they go out of their way to make your time in the park a great experience.
Dale Slobe Grand Rapids, Michigan

I have two favorites. I love Petoskey State Park. Every time we go there, there has been a beautiful sunset. Since my family lives in Harbor Springs and I live in Traverse City, it's a great way to get close without getting too close. We also love Wilderness State Park. The beach there is phenomenal, and we always have a great time. Both parks are relatively close, but makes us feel like we are a million miles away. We just bought a new travel trailer, and can't wait to get out there and start using it at the wonderful Michigan State Parks!
The Testas Family Traverse City, Michigan

My family and I have been going to Clear Lake State Park every year for about eight years. We just love how secluded the park is and the lake is awesome. I live in Lower Michigan and the waters here are pretty murky. We love to go boating and swimming on the lake and really enjoy the clearness of the water. The park itself is very enjoyable, clean and peaceful. The staff is always courteous and informative. My kids love joining the youth activities that the park ranger does, and they have learned a great deal about the outdoors. My family and I give Clear Lake an A+ rating.
Gary Hawks Eagle, Michigan

Our favorite state park is Fort Wilkins State Park in Copper Harbor. There are many sights to see, from the actual fort to Brockway Mountain. Fishing opportunities abound, sighting of bears if you are lucky and many waterfalls in the area to visit and photograph. One of the nice extra perks of the park is that it has a mini-laundromat.
The Simpkins Family Springfield, Michigan

My favorite state park is Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. This one stands out because of the feelings I get just being there -- a sense of stepping back in time, perhaps seeing how a pre-settlement Michigan landscape may have looked, and the feeling of being in a place where the laws of nature take precedence over all others. Craig Lake and other state parks impart a similar feeling and are beautiful places in their own right, but they do not offer the wide array of raw, natural beauty that can be found at the Porkies. A walk along the Escarpment Trail is truly a spiritual experience. The visitor center is really well done, and all of the staff members have been top-notch.
Steve Weis Livonia, Michigan

My family had a wonderful time camping at Wilderness State Park last summer. We live in Indiana and we like to vacation in Michigan. We have made many trips to northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula before, but this was our first time camping there. It was a fun and relaxing vacation for us. Wilderness was a great place to spend time with the family. It was so easy to get to the hiking trails or beaches for our choice of outdoor activities. Plus, Wilderness is close to all of the other attractions around the Straits, making it easy to go on a day trip. We can't wait to go camping at Wilderness again this year.
Brandi Grimm Winona Lake, Indiana

Hartwick Pines State Park is our family's absolute favorite. We love the extensive and historic hiking trails. The visitor center is unrivaled. We always go to the logging museum and see something new that we don't remember seeing before. The biking/hiking trails adjacent to the campground area are challenging and a favorite as well. The lakes, the roomy camping sites, the paved camper pads -- this is simply a campground that has it all. We have made it a point to return every year.
Annette Northrop Millington, Michigan

Fayette Historic State Park is my favorite park. The town site is one of the richest collections of cultural and natural heritage that the state owns. Please do everything you can to preserve, interpret and protect it.
Ted Ligibel Lambertville, Michigan

My favorite state park is Hayes State Park. I truly enjoy this area. The beach access to Wampler's Lake is really great and it's a great lake for boating and swimming. The very nice facilities at the beach make the day pleasant. The somewhat-secluded Round Lake makes for a great fishing adventure with my four kids (ages 13, 11, 8 and 6). We all fish as a family and enjoy the tranquility associated with Round Lake. After a day on the water at Wampler's Lake an evening fishing on Round Lake is just what the doctor ordered.
Jeff Williams Toledo, Ohio

My favorite park for camping is Van Riper State Park. We keep going to this park because the people are very friendly, it is close to home and it also is kept very clean.
Sheila Kjellman Ishpeming, Michigan

My favorite state park is at Indian Lake State Park. It's a nice lake, great for the kids to swim and it's close to visit family. The Upper Peninsula is like home to me.
