Patricia Stewart returned Aug. 30, 2004, to the Michigan Department of
Natural Resources as its chief communications officer, leaving her position as director of communications in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University and external relations communicator for Michigan Sea Grant. Prior to that, she was MSU’s National Food Safety and Toxicology Center’s communications and education services director.
Stewart is also an adjunct instructor at Michigan State University in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife where she teaches a communications course.
She also worked as a communications consultant for natural resources and the environment at Public Sector Consultants, Inc., in Lansing; owned her own business, Stewart Consulting; served as assistant media specialist at Bath high and middle schools where she taught basic computer skills and software applications; and was a substitute teacher in Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties. She left the Michigan DNR in 1992 as its press secretary.
Stewart’s education includes undergraduate degrees in journalism and business administration with a minor in marketing, and a master’s degree in educational technology and instructional design. She has completed some coursework toward a Ph.D., which will focus on how natural resource managers communicate the need for stewardship in a culturally diverse society.
During her career, Stewart has received numerous professional awards and honors, including her work as the producer of several DNR video programs and documentaries:
