    Lake Effects exhibit opens Oct. 5"Lake Effects" exhibit opens Oct. 5 Visit the Michigan Historical Museum in Lansing beginning Oct. 5 to see the new exhibit, "Lake Effects." Learn about major weather events in Michigan's past, including the Thumb Fire of 1881, the Storm of 1913, the Heatwave of 1936, the 1953 Beecher tornado and the Blizzard of 1978.
    Fish egg blowing on the Little Manistee.Little Manistee weir collecting Chinook salmon eggs The Little Manistee weir is an egg-take and salmon harvest facility operated by Fisheries Division on the Little Manistee River each fall. Each fall DNR staff collect Chinook salmon eggs to be sent to State Fish Hatcheries where they will be reared and stocked all over Michigan. Are you in the Manistee area? Call the weir hotline to learn about current activity and pay the river a visit to watch the egg-take efforts!

    Summer Youth Employment Initiative participants Freddie Garland and Tyler Smith split firewoodUnique program introduces urban youngsters to state parks, outdoor recreation and career opportunities A couple of Michigan state parks have new amenities -- and one has fewer invasive plants -- because of a unique program that brings inner-city youths to state parks to work on park projects and experience the outdoors lifestyle. The Summer Youth Employment Initiative is a joint effort of the DNR and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
    Lake sturgeon are fairly unique in Michigan's inland lakes.Looking for juvenile sturgeon on Black Lake Black Lake is unique among Michigan's inland waters in one significant way: it is the only lake that maintains a remnant population of native lake sturgeon large enough to support a recreational fishery. But just how large that sturgeon population is -- and how much help it needs to continue to support that recreational fishery -- was the focus of a three-week survey effort by the DNR Fisheries Division this August.
    Instructor Alan Nelson coaches academy  participants on techniques for riding over obstacles.Partners, instructors help make ORV safety a priority As the popularity of ORV riding in Michigan increases, so, too, does the demand for quality, comprehensive safety education. That's where the DNR and its many partners enter the picture. The DNR's Law Enforcement Division has a Recreational Safety Section that heads up the state's ORV safety education program. The section consults with involved users, ORV organizations and existing ORV instructors to continually improve this program.
