The DNR and a Mentored Youth Hunting team are hard at work on the regulations to govern this important program. You won't find a state with a prouder hunting tradition than Michigan! A DNR program aimed at getting children under 10 interesting in hunting and fishing, Mentored Youth Hunting licenses go on sale March 1. The "package" license includes spring and fall turkey tags (valid for public or private land), a small game license, a furbearer trapping permit, two deer tags (valid for antlered or antlerless deer) and an all-species fishing license. Youth ice fishing2012 Winter Free Fishing Weekend Set for February 18 & 19
Join the DNR in an effort to get more individuals of all ages out fishing as part of the annual winter Free Fishing Weekend! For two days all fishing license fees will be waived so residents and out-of-state visitors can enjoy fishing for all species of fish during their respective open seasons. Please note all regulations will still apply during that time. We welcome you to become a part of the tradition this February, join us for a time to get together and have some fishing fun!

Michigan's wolf population was officially removed from the federal endangered species list on Friday, Jan. 27. Management authority over wolves has returned to the DNR, putting the state's Wolf Management Plan into effect. Wolves remain a protected, nongame species in Michigan, but state management will afford more options when dealing with wolves threatening livestock or dogs. Two dozen youngsters, mostly boys but some young ladies as well, were on hand for the Saturday, Jan. 21, event, which was hosted by the Department of Natural Resources' Wildlife Division, the Mid-Michigan Chapter of the United Sportsmen's Alliance (MMUSA) and the Belding Sportsman's Club. The youths came with parents, mentors or friends to be part of the first of what the sponsors envision as an annual event.
