Synopsis of Year 1

During the first year of study 10 of the 15 satellite marked geese left Michigan around May 28 and migrated to sites along the eastern and western coasts of the James and Hudson Bay, and one flew as far north as South Hampton Island (about 2500 miles). (View map)

A telemetry flight was then taken in late July to search for 22 geese marked with conventional radio transmitters that had been missing from the Michigan study area (view map of the flight path). These birds also left around May 28. Satellite transmitter locations were used as waypoints to search for the missing geese. By the end of the trip, 16 of the 22 missing birds were located (view map of VHF locations with PTT locations 2000).

The majority of the satellite and radio marked birds began to return to Michigan from mid to late September.
