Cardinal-Flower (Lobelia cardinalis)

This brilliant flower, named for its scarlet red spikes, blooms in late summer. This colorful species typically occurs along river and stream banks and can also be found in swamps and along lakeshores. Sometimes it may form large colonies in wet soils in roadside ditches.
