Wilderness Visitor Center at Porkies Offers Nature Programs This Weekend

The Wilderness Visitor Center at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park will offer special nature programs this weekend for campers and park visitors.

On Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, the center will host the Birds of Prey program at 3 p.m. Eastern Time. The Wildlife Recovery Association will provide a live birds of prey program allowing visitors to see these birds up close.

Also on Saturday, the center will host a program called Giants of the North at 6 p.m. Eastern Time. This program will be an hour-long presentation on the "Big Three" of northern Michigan -wolves, moose and black bears.

On Sunday, May 25, the center will offer a short hike called "Stick Your Head in a Bear Den." The hike will begin at 6 p.m. Eastern Time, and participants should meet at South Boundary Road, which is about a mile south of the visitor center. The hike will last about one hour and will take participants through some bear habitat within the park.

The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is located at 33303 Headquarters Rd. in Silver City in Ontonagon County.

Reservations for camping can be made on-line at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling 800-44-PARKS.

All motor vehicles entering a park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the entrance. Cost is $24 for resident annual and $6 for resident daily. A non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident daily is $8.
