An open house is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, to allow the public to review the draft design plans for improvements to an undeveloped public access site located on Lake Idlewild in Lake County. The open house is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Yates Township Fire Station Hall, located at 2155 East U.S. 10 in Lake County.
In 2007, as part of Governor Jennifer M. Granholm's "Idlewild, Michigan Transformation Initiative," the DNR received a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grant for $324,900 to develop approximately five acres into a small natural park with a barrier-free fishing dock and carry down access site. The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund supports the acquisition and development of public recreation lands with revenues generated from oil, gas, and other mineral lease and royalty payments on state-owned lands.
The DNR is inviting the public to provide input on the planned developments. Individuals can visit the fire station hall anytime during the open house to ask questions and discuss the project with DNR staff.
Founded in 1912, Idlewild represented freedom for many African Americans, being one of more than 30 resorts in the country where African Americans were permitted to vacation and purchase property before such discrimination became illegal in 1964. Commonly known as "Black Eden," Idlewild was an active, year-round community through the mid-1960s frequented by well-known entertainers and professionals from throughout the country.
Individuals attending this meeting are requested to refrain from using heavily scented personal care products in order to enhance accessibility for everyone. Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for the meeting should contact Troy Rife at 231-775-9727 a minimum of five business days before the meeting. Requests made less than five business days before events may not be accommodated.
