Department of Natural Resources state parks and recreation officials today announced Scott Kuefler, an internationally known chainsaw wood carver from Chesterfield Township, will demonstrate his craft at the Brighton State Recreation Area July 5.

In 2007, Kuefler won the Great Lakes Chainsaw Carving Championship in Oscoda and received first-place honors in the Blue Water Chainsaw Carving Series event in Manistee. Last month he placed 7th in the World Chainsaw Art Competition held in Toei, Japan.

The two-hour demonstration will be at the Bishop Lake campground from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and previously carved items will be available for purchase following the demonstration. Kuefler also will create beautiful carvings from a downed willow tree at the Bishop Lake campground entrance July 9.

"Campers and the general public are invited to 'Go-Get Outdoors' to watch Scott create beautiful wood carvings from the remains of downed and dead trees," said Charles Dennison, park manager. "It's amazing to see how quickly he creates a work of art."

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
