Wilderness State Park Adds Upgrades to Rustic Cabins

Contact:  Rich Hill Jr. 231-436-5381
Agency: Natural Resources

July 24, 2008 The Department of Natural Resources announced that three of the nine rustic cabins at Wilderness State Park have recently received upgrades. The park received funding from the DNR Park and Recreation Division's "Chief's Challenge" to install basic electrical service in the three bunkhouses located in the campground. The recently completed work includes lights and electrical outlets in what was previously a rustic cabin.

"We completed the upgrades because many of our users said they would like to have electricity available. We also hope this may encourage new park visitors that may not have wanted an experience quite that 'rustic.' The cabins are within walking distance of the beach, located on the Straits of Mackinac and cabin users will have access to other campground amenities," said Rich Hill Jr., Wilderness' park supervisor.

These large historic log cabins sleep 24 people and are located next to each other, which make them ideal lodging for large groups or families visiting the Mackinaw area. The cabins rent for $80 a night and may be reserved through the call center at 1-800-44-PARKS or online at www.midnrreservations.com.

For more information, please contact Wilderness State Park at 231-436-5381. The park is located at 903 Wilderness Park Dr. in Carp Lake, just west of Mackinaw City.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the entrance. Cost is $24 for resident annual and $6 for resident daily. A non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident daily is $8.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
