The Michigan Fisheries Visitor Center, located in Oden near Petoskey, has announced its August program schedule featuring a variety of activities for children and families. All programs are free of charge.
'Get Jiggy With It,' Wednesday, Aug. 13 and 20, noon. Children can make their own handmade jig and practice casting for backyard bass.
'Fun With Worms,' Thursday, Aug. 14 and 21, noon. Learn how to build a worm abode for use during your next fishing adventure.
'Birding 101,' Friday, Aug. 15, 4 p.m. Learn to recognize and identify your favorite birds.
On Saturday, Aug. 9 and 16, the center offers three programs: Catch-and-release fishing sessions from 8 to 10 a.m. m. for children ages 5-16. No registration is necessary; all equipment and bait is provided. At noon, make plaster animal tracks to take home and 'Leaves and Legumes' is offered at 4 p.m.
On Sunday, Aug. 10 and 17, 'Give a Hoot' - All about Owls begins at noon, and learn how to identify fish at 3 p.m.
The center also is pleased to welcome Mike DiLorenzeo for a book signing of his latest work, 'Adventures with Jonny, Let's Go Fishing!' Aug. 16 from noon to 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
The Michigan Fisheries Visitor Center is located on US-31 in Oden, approximately five miles east of Petoskey. The center is open for the summer, 7 days a week and offers daily tours of the Oden State Fish Hatchery and weekly nature programs through Labor Day Weekend.
