Baraga State Park Hosts a 'GO-Get Outdoors' Halloween Harvest Festival

Contact:  Dan Dowdy 906-353-6558
Agency: Natural Resources

September 3, 2008

Baraga State Park will host its third annual "Fall Harvest Festival" event on Friday and Saturday, Sept.12-13.

On Friday, visitors can enjoy an "Owls, Bats and Other Creatures of the Night" program beginning at 7 p.m. in the park pavilion. There will also be games for children at the campground host site.

Starting at noon on Saturday, park visitors can participate in activities including decorate your own trick-or-treat bag, bobbing for apples, hay rides, face painting, trick-or-treating, costume contest and a Halloween themed campsite decorating contest with prizes.

"With new events being added each year, our Harvest Festival is becoming very popular with park users. The campsite decorating contest, a highlight of the event, sparks some friendly competition among campers," said Dan Dowdy, unit supervisor. "We encourage anyone wanting to camp at this event to make reservations now. But you don't have to be a camper to participate -- all visitors are welcome to attend."

Baraga State Park has 106 campsites with 20 or 30 amp electric (five of which are pull-through sites), 10 semi-modern campsites, two modern restrooms (one is universally accessible), sanitation station, pump-out service, and a rentable mini-cabin and tepee. The park also has a playground, pavilion, hiking trail and day use area on Lake Superior's Keweenaw Bay.

For more information about this event, accessibility, or persons needing accommodations to attend this event, contact the park supervisor of Baraga at 906-353-6558 (or TTY/TDD711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired) at least seven days prior to the weekend, or view information about accessibility details at www.michigan.gov/baraga.

For reservations at Baraga State Park, or any other Michigan State Park, please call 1-800-447-2757 or make reservations online at www.midnrreservations.com.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the entrance. Cost is $24 for resident annual and $6 for resident daily. A non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident day is $8.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
