Fort Wilkins Historic State Park Hosting 2nd Annual Fall Harvest/Geocaching Event Sept. 27

Agency: Natural Resources

September 18, 2008

Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, with the support of the Fort Wilkins Natural History Association (FWNHA) and donations from local businesses, will be hosting its second annual "GO-Get Outdoors" Fall Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 27.

A geocaching event begins at 10 a.m. in the west barracks of the fort, and a cache list will be distributed. Several caches, with varying degrees of difficulty, will be placed at historically, geologically or naturally significant sites in the park. The individual acquiring the most "points" will have the first selection of prizes. Participants who obtained the minimum number of points will be entered into a drawing for other prizes, including those who did not participate in geocaching. Drawings will continue throughout the evening as the fun continues and as long as the prizes last.

A treasure hunt begins at 2:30 p.m. in the picnic shelter area. Youngsters not yet familiar with geocaching can get their first experience by participating in a treasure hunt. In addition to receiving some goodies, "treasure hunters" possessing letterboxing pads may have them stamped by the park upon completion of the hunt.

The prize drawings begin at 4 p.m. in the West Campground. Participants must be present at the time of drawing to win prizes. A cookout and campfire social will follow with hot cider, coffee, roasting of hotdogs and marshmallows and more.

There is no charge for these events, although donations may be made to the FWNHA. More festivities are planned this year, with the addition of another geocaching event and treasure hunt.

Fort Wilkins Historic State Park is located at 15223 U.S. Hwy. 41, one mile east of Copper Harbor, in the Keewenaw Peninsula. Camping reservations for this event can be made on-line at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling 800-447-2757.

For more information about this event and participation, the park, or accessibility at the park, contact the park supervisor, Lee VerBerkmoes, at 906-289-4215 (or TTY/TDD711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit the website at www.michigan.gov/historicfortwilkins.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the entrance. Cost is $24 for resident annual and $6 for resident daily. A non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident daily is $8.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
