Agency: Natural Resources

Oct. 1, 2008

Fort Custer State Recreation Area will host its third annual campground Fall Harvest Festival on Friday and Saturday, Oct.17-18.

On Friday, campers will have the opportunity to set up camp and start decorating their campsites for the best-decorated campsite contest.

Saturday's activities will include hay rides, face and pumpkin painting, trick-or-treating throughout the campground, a visit from Smokey Bear, a costume parade, and coffee with the campground host and park manager. Campers are encouraged to bring their own pumpkins, decorations and treats to pass out for trick-or-treating. Prizes will be awarded for the campsite decorating contest.

"Our harvest festival has greatly increased from the first year," said Tony Trojanowski, park manager. "This is a great way to 'GO-Get Outdoors' and spend quality time with the family while enjoying the fall season."

Fort Custer Recreation Area is located at 5163 W. Fort Custer Dr. in Augusta in Kalamazoo County. It offers 219 campsites with 20 or 30-amp service, two mini-cabins that will accommodate four people each and two accessible modern restroom/shower buildings. The recreation area also has three pavilions, 28 miles of multi-use trails and a beach on Eagle Lake in Kalamazoo County. Sites are still available for this event, and camping reservations can be made on-line at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling 800-447-2757.

For more information about this event, the park, or accessibility at the park, contact Tony Trojanowski at 269-731-4200 (or TTY/TDD711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit the web site at www.michigan.gov/fortcuster.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the entrance. Cost is $24 for resident annual and $6 for resident daily. A non-resident annual is $29 and a non-resident daily is $8.
