The Department of Natural Resources announced today that Ping Wang, Chinese Consulate General, and 50 members of the consulate will tour Fort Custer Recreation Area on Saturday, Oct. 25, to view the fall colors and fish the waters of Whitford-Lawler Lake.
The day trip will include stops at other area attractions, and is a rare chance for the diplomats to relax and experience first hand part of the culture of their host country.
"We are very pleased to welcome these international visitors," said Tony Trojanowski, park manager. "It is our hope that Americans and the Chinese will both gain a greater understanding of how great an impact outdoor recreation plays in our respective cultures and daily lives."
The trip, which is organized by Bishop Richard Fenner of Help Ministries International, is intended to foster improved international relations between China and America.
Fort Custer Recreation Area is located at 5163 W. Fort Custer Dr. in Augusta. Originally farmland, Fort Custer comprises 3,033 acres located between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. The terrain is typical of southern Michigan farm country, and features three lakes, a river, second growth forests, remnant areas of prairie, and an excellent trail system used by hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers.
