Keweenaw Point Citizen Advisory Committee to Meet Oct. 29 in Allouez

Contact:  Tom Courchaine 906-228-6561
Agency: Natural Resources

Oct. 22, 2008

The Keweenaw Point Citizens Advisory Committee will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Allouez Community Center, located at 388 Bumbletown Rd. in Allouez. The public is welcome.

The committee was formed to provide recommendations to the Department of Natural Resources for usage of the recently acquired 8,387-acre parcel of state land at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Fifteen committee members representing local units of government and interest groups made recommendations to cover the road system, motorized use, non-motorized use, access sites, forest and timber management, day-use areas, camping and minimum impact zones.

The DNR wanted to reconvene the committee for this meeting to discuss the implementation status of the recommendations and the priority projects, said acting DNR Field Deputy Tom Courchaine.

"The department has taken each of the committee's recommendations into account," Courchaine said. "We were able to implement some of the recommendations, while others will take time due to available resources."

Individuals attending the meeting are requested to refrain from using heavily-scented personal care products, in order to enhance accessibility for everyone. Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for any of these meetings should contact Penny Bacon at 906-228-6561 a minimum of five business days before the meeting. Requests made less than five business days before the meeting may not be accommodated.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
