Dec. 10, 2008

The Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery Visitor Center has announced its winter programs for January and February.

On Saturdays, Jan. 17 and Feb. 28, the center will host a fly-tying program for beginners called "Beginner's Fly-Tying: Meet the Woolybugger" at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Participants will learn the basics of tying flies and the equipment needed to do so. All practice materials will be provided. There are limited openings for each session, and pre-registration is required. The program is recommended for those ages 8 years and older.

Snowshoe walks will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 14, at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; and on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Participants can bring their own snowshoes or borrow a pair from the visitor center. A quick lesson on walking on snowshoes will be provided. Participants should dress appropriately for cold weather. Pre-registration is required for those borrowing snowshoes from the visitor center. Participants should call ahead to check for weather-related cancellations.

On Saturday, Feb. 14, the visitor center will host a winter bird walk at 10 a.m. The Audubon Society of Kalamazoo will lead the walk and participants will discover the many birds that spend the winter in Michigan. The walk will be a part of the Great Backyard Bird Count, and participants will help keep track of what they see and will be submitting the information to a national database. This program will be approximately 90 minutes.

Unless otherwise noted, programs are one hour in length and are free. Programs are open to all ages and skill levels.

The Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery is located at 34270 County Road 652 in Mattawan. For more information on these programs, please contact the visitor center at 269-668-2876.
