The Department of Natural Resources is reminding everyone to exercise caution while using the Chassell to Houghton grade in Houghton County.
"While this former railroad grade is state-owned, it is not a designated snowmobile trail," said Don Mankee, DNR's Baraga Forest Management Unit manager. "It is legal to use a snowmobile on the grade, but it is not signed or groomed, and snowmobilers should proceed with great caution."
Mankee said that snowmobile riders on the grade may encounter hazards such as snowbanks near the many driveways that cross the grade. They may also encounter parked vehicles and equipment, such as trailers, within the right-of-way, although it is unlawful to block the grade from safe passage.
Mankee also encouraged the public to contact local law enforcement, or the DNR's Baraga office at (906) 353-6651, to report hazards blocking the grade. All complaints will be investigated.
"All users of the grade need to be aware that many types of recreation is occurring on the trail, including snowmobiling, walking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and even dog sledding," Mankee said. "All users need to be aware of the risks along the trail."
The DNR is in the process of reviewing a land use order to prohibit motorized use of the grade in the summer months.
