Agency: Natural Resources

Jan. 21, 2009

The Department of Natural Resources today announced the schedule of volunteer stewardship workdays to be held throughout February in southeastern Michigan state parks and recreation areas.

Volunteers are needed to cut invasive shrubs in natural areas to help protect and restore these unique areas in the following southeast Michigan state parks. Volunteering for these workdays is a great way to GO-Get Outdoors, breathe some fresh air to avoid cabin fever and fulfill New Year's resolutions to be active.

Dates, times and locations of the workdays are as follows:

  • Saturday, Feb. 7, Island Lake Recreation Area (Livingston Co.), 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 8, Algonac State Park (St. Clair Co.), 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 14, Bald Mountain Recreation Area (Oakland Co.), 9 a.m. to noon
  • Saturday, Feb. 14, Highland Recreation Area (Oakland Co.), 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 15, Brighton Recreation Area (Livingston Co.), 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 21, Waterloo Recreation Area (Washtenaw Co.), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 22, Pinckney Recreation Area (Washtenaw Co.), 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 28, Highland Recreation Area (Oakland Co.), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Volunteers should bring appropriate clothing for working outdoors in the winter, including long pants, multiple layers, boots, gloves and drinking water.

For information about the specific tasks at each location and to obtain directions, visit the DNR Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnrvolunteers and link to the "Calendar of Volunteer Stewardship Workdays." All volunteers are asked to register using the forms available on the Web site. Any questions should be directed to Laurel Malvitz-Draper at (248) 359-9057 or malvitzl@michigan.gov.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
