Tahquamenon Falls State Park hosts its annual winter festival on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 12 to 8 p.m. at the Upper Falls parking area. Events include an antique snowmobile display by the Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum, free snowshoe rental, guided snowshoe hikes, evening lantern lit cross-country skiing and hot chocolate by the campfire.
Tahquamenon Falls is beautiful during the winter, with large blue icicles contrasting with the dark tannin-stained water. Both the Upper and Lower Falls are viewable via a snow-packed walking trail. The semi-modern campsites available this winter at the Lower Falls for only $16 per night include electrical outlets, but no flush toilets or running water. To make a camping reservation, call (800) 44-PARKS or go online at www.midnrreservations.com.
On each of the remaining Saturdays in February, the park offers guided snowshoe hikes, free snowshoe rental and evening lantern lit cross-country skiing at the Upper Falls. Snowshoe hikes are at 11 a.m. and at 1 and 3 p.m. The evening skiing and snowshoeing is from 6 to 8 p.m.
All events are free; however, all motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
