Agency: Natural Resources

Feb. 4, 2009

Wells State Park is hosting a "GO-Get Outdoors" cross-country ski and snowshoe event on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 1 to 8 p.m. Central Time.

Visitors will enjoy approximately one mile of groomed cross-country ski trails. As the sun goes down, the glow of old-fashioned lanterns will light up the trail. Visitors can warm up at the fire in one of the park's historic stone trailside shelters, or they can stop and rest at a trailside cabin and enjoy one of the hot beverages that will be provided.

Cross-country skis and snowshoe equipment rentals will be available and provided by Cycle Path of Menominee. Equipment rentals are limited. To reserve equipment in your size for this event, contact Cycle Path of Menominee ahead of time at (906) 863-9361 or e-mail them at cycle_path_mi@yahoo.com.

J.W. Wells State Park is located in the Upper Peninsula at N7670 Highway M-35 in Cedar River, approximately 35 miles south of Escanaba and 25 miles north of Menominee in Menominee County.

For more information about this event, the park, accessibility, or persons needing accommodations to attend this event, contact the park supervisor at (906) 863-9747 (or TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit the park's Web site at www.michigan.gov/wells.

Wells State Park is open year-round. It offers rustic camping in the winter, and has a lodge that sleeps 12. To find out if lodging is available for this weekend, contact the park. Reservations for the remainder of the season can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling 800-44-PARKS (800-447-2757).

Feb. 14-15 also is Michigan's Winter Free Fishing Weekend. Visitors also may want to try their luck on the ice of Green Bay or the Big Cedar River. Fishing licenses are not required for Free Fishing Weekend, but all other Michigan fishing regulations apply.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
