Agency: Natural Resources

Feb. 13, 2009

Winter isn't over yet and despite the warming trend in recent days, Sleeper State Park in Huron County is planning a "GO-Get Outdoors" cross-country ski evening Saturday, Feb. 21, from 6 to 9 p.m., in conjunction with the annual "Shanty Days" sponsored by the Caseville Chamber of Commerce.

Luminarias will be lit at 6 p.m. and the ski run will begin at the trailhead behind the park headquarters. There will be one and one-half miles of groomed trail, a roaring bonfire, beverages, snacks and a heated restroom. Snowshoers also are welcome but are reminded to walk on the side of the trail, away from the ski tracks. The trails are groomed and also open throughout the day for general cross-country skiing.

Ski equipment rentals are available at Heins Hardware in nearby Port Austin. For information, call (989) 738-7311 or go online to www.heinshardware.com.

These events may be canceled if there is insufficient snow. Please contact the park at (989) 856-4411 prior to this event for updates. To learn more about Shanty Days, go to www.casevillechamber.com.

Sleeper State Park is located at 6573 State Park Road in Caseville. For more information about this event, the park, accessibility, or persons needing accommodations to attend this event, contact the park supervisor at (989) 856-4411 (or TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit the Web site at www.michigan.gov/sleeper.

The park also offers cabins for winter lodging, and reservations are being accepted for the summer camping season. Reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling 800-44-PARKS (800-447-2757).

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
