March 16, 2009

The Department of Natural Resources has launched a comprehensive planning process for the Clinton-Ionia-Shiawassee (C-I-S) State Rail-Trail. This process is being led by the National Park Service Rivers and Trails Conservation Assistance Program, and includes representatives from the Departments of Natural Resources and Transportation, and Clinton, Ionia and Shiawassee counties.

The project is in the early stages of planning and officials are seeking input from the public on recreation uses and development priorities. Citizens who are interested in this trail or would like to learn more about the project are encouraged to attend one of the following open houses:

  • Monday, March 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the James P. Capitain Center, 149 E. Corunna Ave. in Corunna.
  • Tuesday, March 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clinton County Courthouse, 100 State St., St. Johns
  • Wednesday, March 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ionia County Commission on Aging Building, located at 115 Hudson St. in Ionia.

Individuals attending the meeting are requested to refrain from using heavily scented personal care products, in order to enhance accessibility for everyone. Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for the C-I-S State Rail-Trail Open House should contact Andrea Turner at (517) 373-2891 a minimum of five business days before the scheduled meeting. Requests made less than five business days before each open house may not be accommodated.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
