DNR Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program Offers Mountain Biking Workshop

Contact:  Lynn Marla 517-241-2225
Agency: Natural Resources

April 6, 2009

The Department of Natural Resources Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program, in conjunction with the Michigan Mountain Biking Association and Stony Creek Metropark, is sponsoring the 9th annual Women's Mountain Biking Symposium June 13 at the metropark located in Macomb County's Shelby Township.

The workshop, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is geared for the beginner to the intermediate rider. Participants learn how to ride trails, including the basics of braking and cornering and how to distribute body weight on climbs and descents. A maintenance clinic then covers basic trail repair, how to fix a flat tire and a broken chain, and how to keep a bike clean and properly lubricated. A third session, Mountain Biking 101, provides an introduction to racing and a forum that provides answers to each participant's mountain biking questions and time to share experiences with others.

A group ride and a prize drawing will conclude the workshop. The cost is $20 and the registration form is available on the DNR Web site at www.michigan.gov/bow. Participants need to bring their own bike, helmet and a sack lunch. Bagels and juice will be provided in the morning and water throughout the day.

"This is a very popular one-day seminar that always fills up quickly," said Lynn Marla, state BOW Program coordinator. "This year's event can accommodate 60 women, so everyone is encouraged to sign up early."

For more information, contact Tom Lining at bow@mmba.org or Lynn Marla at marlal@michigan.gov; (517) 241-2225.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
