Sleepy Hollow State Park will be hosting its third annual Heritage Plow Day, sponsored by the Sleepy Hollow Trail Riders Association, on Saturday, May 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

At this event, families can watch the draft horse teams pull traditional plow equipment as they demonstrate historic farming methods. Plowed areas will later be planted with crops to benefit wildlife in the area.

Volunteers will be on hand to offer information about traditional farming and the work required to feed and maintain the draft horses. A draft horse can reach up to 2,000 pounds in weight.

The Sleepy Hollow Trail Riders Association is a friends group of Sleepy Hollow State Park. This group, along with many other friends groups, works for the benefit of the state parks. Friends groups also help with park events such as the Ichabod Crane Weekend at Sleepy Hollow in the fall.

With the exception of a nominal fee for horse drawn hayrides, Plow Day events are free. All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
