May 7, 2009

Hayes State Park near Onsted is hosting its third annual geocaching event, "Lazy Hayes Days," May 15-17, in cooperation with "Team Rod & Tod," a local geocaching group.

The "Go-Get Outdoors" event begins Friday evening, after campers check in to their campsites, with a hot dog roast and campfire social at the campground activity area that starts around 7. Saturday's activities begin at noon at the beach, followed by a silent auction at 1 p.m. and a cook-off at 2. The day ends with dinner at 5 p.m. Geocaching events will held throughout the day, with prizes awarded to the winners. There also will be a night cache on Saturday and another campfire social. A community breakfast will be held Sunday morning.

Lazy Hayes Days III is being hosted by Rodney Holbrook in memory of his former geocaching teammate Tod Phillips, who was killed in a motorcycle accident just outside the park entrance in 2008. All proceeds from the sale of a "tribute coin" will be used for bike awareness programs, including a billboard rental near the accident site to help promote bicycle and motorcycle awareness. The group also is selling Lazy Hayes Days III commemorative items online at www.buttonsandstuff.com.

"Tod was an avid motorcycle and geocaching enthusiast," Holbrook said. "He will be missed this weekend, but I know he will be there in spirit."

Team Rod & Tod has placed 25 new caches at Hayes State Park for 2009. The caches will remain in the park all season for other geocachers to enjoy. For updates regarding this event or for those interested in participating, contact Rodney Holbrook at roddyville65@comcast.net.

Hayes State Park is located at 1220 Wamplers Lake Road in Onsted. For more information about the park or accessibility, contact the park supervisor at (517) 467-7401 (TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired). Camping reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling 800-447-2757; however, you do not need to be camping in the park to participate in these events.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
