Two Luce County Boating Access Sites Closing Temporarily May 18

Contact:  James Hooker 906-293-5131, ext. 4021
Agency: Natural Resources

May 12, 2009

Department of Natural Resources parks and recreation officials today announced that boating access sites on Twin Lakes and Kak's Lake in Luce County will be closed for construction beginning Monday, May 18.

Site improvements, which are expected to take four weeks to complete, will include erosion and drainage control, culvert replacement, parking lot improvements and paving at both sites, plus the addition of a universally accessible restroom and stairway replacement at the Twin Lakes boating access site.

Cottage residents on both lakes are urged to launch their boats prior to May 18 since both sites will be barricaded through June 15 for safety reasons. There are no alternate launch sites on these lakes.

The contract for these projects was awarded by competitive bidding to Norris Contracting, Inc. of Sault Ste. Marie. Cost for both projects is approximately $132,000. The construction work is being funded through the Michigan State Waterways Fund, a restricted fund comprised of boat registration fees and a portion of the state's marine fuel tax.

For more information or updates about these projects, contact James Hooker, manager of the Newberry Field Office, at (906) 293-5131, ext. 4021, or Gary Ellenwood, Newberry District supervisor, at (906) 293-5131, ext. 4020.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources
for current and future generations.
