Aloha State Park Hosting 'GO-Get Outdoors' Luau May 30

Contact:  Jeremy Spell 231-625-2522
Agency: Natural Resources

May 19, 2009

Aloha State Park is hosting its first Luau on Saturday, May 30, from 4 to 9 p.m. The event features the Petoskey Steel Drum Band, an official pig roast, games for the entire family and, weather permitting, a sunset fit for paradise.

"With more than 50 waterfront campsites, a sunset view and the obvious name of our campground, it just seemed like the perfect event to kick off the summer," said Park Supervisor Jeremy Spell. "Aloha State Park is situated in the middle of the popular Inland Waterway -- a 38-mile water trail that connects Crooked Lake to Lake Huron -- making this a great weekend destination for boaters who want to camp and enjoy world-class entertainment."

This event is for all ages. The cost is $8 per person for the pig roast; kids 8 and under eat for free. Participants are reminded to bring a blanket or chair to enjoy the outdoor concert taking place in the campground on the waterfront. Grass skirts, luau attire and festive spirits are welcome.

Community support for this event has been strong, with local businesses such as the Cheboygan Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau, Fernelius Auto Dealers, Great Lakes Meat, Kmart and Glenn's sponsoring the event.

Aloha State Park is located at 4347 Third St., five miles south of Cheboygan via M-33, or one mile west of Cheboygan via M-212. Aloha State Park offers modern camping on beautiful Mullett Lake, along with fishing, boating, swimming and picnicking. It is close to many of Michigan's famous travel attractions, such as the Straits of Mackinaw, and is at the center of the Inland Lakes Waterway. Camping reservations can be made online at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling the Department of Natural Resources central reservation system at 800-447-2757.

For more information about this event, the park, accessibility or persons needing accommodations to attend this event, contact the park supervisor at (231) 625-2522 (TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit www.michigan.gov/aloha.

All motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.

Join the DNR in celebrating the 90th anniversary of Michigan State Parks (1919-2009) this year. Events are being posted at www.michigan.gov/dnrgogetoutdoors.
