Albert E. Sleeper State Park, located on Saginaw Bay near Caseville, will hold its ninth annual "Walk Through Time" event, beginning Thursday, May 28, through Sunday, May 31.
Park visitors will be able to walk through a series of historically authentic camps with costumed re-enactors portraying different periods of daily life in North America. Visit a Viking camp, then work your way through the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, the Mountain Men era, and end with the Civil War. Along the way, listen to a voyager tell his stories, watch cooking demonstrations over an open fire and see the blacksmith working his forge. Other exhibits include fur traders, musket demonstrations, a clothing show, lessons on the history of lanterns, candle making, spinning, weaving and hide tanning. Try your hand at tomahawk throwing or quill writing, and listen to music from different eras. These are just a few of the many activities that will be demonstrated at the park.
"Many participants are local residents interested in preserving the experiences and traditions of our ancestors," said Park Supervisor George Lauinger. "Everyone is encouraged to ask the re-enactors about the activities or daily life in the era they are portraying."
The encampment is open Thursday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon, at the west end of the Sleeper State Park day use area. Reservations for two-hour school group sessions on Thursday and Friday can be arranged with the park office by calling (989) 586-4411.
