Newaygo State Park Invites Guests to 'GO-Get Outdoors' on June 20 for a Fun-Filled Day in Celebration of Michigan State Parks' 90th Anniversary

Newaygo State Park is inviting the public for a day full of fun activities on Saturday, June 20, as part of the 90th anniversary celebration of Michigan State Parks.

Events will include a pig roast, geocaching, fishing, music in the park, disc golf and more. A list of the activities and the schedule include:

10 a.m.: "Take Me Caching" -- Members of the Michigan Geocaching Organization will be offering many activities:

10 to 10:45 a.m.: Geocaching 101 Class
10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Hit all the new caches. New cache information will be passed out. Experienced cachers will mentor beginners in small groups.

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Games for the kids by the Morley Stanwood Girl Scout Troop 1607

1 to 2 p.m.: Pig Roast

2 p.m.: Prize drawings

2:30 p.m.: Cleanup and continue geocaching

2 p.m.: "Take Me Golfing" -- Professional disc golf competitor Dr. Leonard Johnson will be teaching newcomers the art of disc golf. Discs and targets will be available for beginners. Experienced golfers will mentor beginners in an 18-hole outing on the park's new pro-quality course. Opportunities to win prizes donated by local businesses will be revealed during the event.

4 p.m.: "Cake and Ice Cream" -- Free cake and ice cream as part of the Michigan State Parks' 90th anniversary celebration.

5:30 p.m.: "Take Me Fishing" -- Members of local bass clubs will promote their sport by mentoring small groups of visitors. Come fish in a three-hour tournament on Hardy Pond. All participants under 18 will receive a free rod and reel combo donated by the Michigan Conservation Officer Association.

5:30 p.m.: Develop teams
6 p.m.: Tournament begins
9 p.m.: Weigh-in at boat launch ramp
9:15 p.m.: Prizes will be awarded.

9:30 p.m.: "Music in the Park" -- Local musicians will share their art around the campfire.

Newaygo State Park is located at 2793 Beech St. near Newaygo. To reach the park, take US-131 to Exit 12, travel west five miles to Beech Street, then north on Beech to the park entrance.

All events are free of charge. However, all motor vehicles entering a state park or recreation area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
