Contact:  Dan Mullen 989-724-5126
Agency: Natural Resources

June 11, 2009

Harrisville State Park will celebrate Michigan State Parks' 90th Anniversary by featuring the second annual "Explorer Weekend" on Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21.

The popular State Park Explorer Program is presently featured at 39 Michigan state parks. Ranger Margaret, Harrisville's Explorer Guide, will lead park visitors as they explore Harrisville State Park and investigate the natural and cultural resources of Alcona County. Guided walking tours and outdoor educational programs will highlight the weekend-long program.

Park visitors are invited to "GO-Get Outdoors" to explore birding programs, hikes, children's games, Petoskey stone hunts, and a special Sturgeon Point Lighthouse shoreline lantern tour on the beautiful Lake Huron shore. Cake and ice cream will also be served at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, at the park's pavilion in the day use area as part of the 90th anniversary of Michigan State Park's celebration.

Various other interpretive programs and tours will be held throughout the weekend on both Saturday and Sunday. A schedule of events will be posted at Harrisville State Park the week prior to June 20.

Harrisville State Park is located at 248 State Park Rd., at the intersection of M-72 and US-23 in Harrisville. For more information about the events, the park, accessibility, or persons needing accommodations to attend these events, contact the park supervisor at (989) 724-5126 (TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit www.michigan.gov/harrisville.
