June 15, 2009

Cheboygan State Park will host a Summer Olympics Beach Event on Saturday, June 20, in celebration of the Michigan State Parks' 90th anniversary.

Everyone is invited to test their skills in the Summer Olympics Beach Events, but most activities are aimed at the 5- to 15- year-old age group. Scheduled events include a children's triathlon, sand fishing, beach tug of war, casting using a practice plug with a fishing pole, the longest cast for accuracy and fishing golf (like frisbee golf), along with many more activities to be announced on event day. There will be prizes, medals and awards for the events. Participants should bring swimsuits, towels, sun block and other necessities for a day at the beach.

The events will begin at noon and end at 4 p.m. at the Cheboygan State Park beach area on Duncan Bay. Snacks and refreshments will be offered throughout the afternoon, with cake and ice cream being served at 4 p.m. as part of the 90th anniversary celebration.

This will be a great day for everyone to "GO-Get Outdoors" and celebrate 90 years of outdoor memories with Michigan State Parks.

Cheboygan State Park is located at 4490 Beach Rd., three miles east of downtown Cheboygan off US-23. For more information about the events, the park, accessibility, or persons needing accommodations to attend this celebration, contact the park supervisor at (231) 627-2811 (TTY/TDD 711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired) or visit www.michigan.gov/cheboygan.
